Heavy Rains in Delhi and NCR Bring Relief and Challenges

On Tuesday, heavy rain poured over various parts of Delhi, bringing much-needed relief from the recent hot weather. Noida and Ghaziabad in the National Capital Region (NCR) also experienced heavy showers. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted more rain over the next five days.

Visuals show people navigating through the rain in Ghaziabad. This fresh spell of rain comes after Delhi faced severe rainfall in June, which caused significant disruptions and led to the deaths of at least six people, including children. The city experienced its highest single-day rainfall in 88 years on June 28, leading to widespread flooding and power outages. The heavy rain also caused the canopy of Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 to collapse, resulting in one fatality.

Due to the recent downpours, the prices of vegetables, especially tomatoes, have increased in north India, including Uttar Pradesh, Delhi NCR, and Haryana. Farmers in the Muradabad region, known for its tomato farming, reported crop damage due to the heavy rain. As a result, tomato prices have surged from 40-50 rupees per kilo in June to 75-80 rupees per kilo. Potato prices have also risen to 25-30 rupees per kilo, and onion prices have reached 40-45 rupees per kilo.
