Heavy Rain Shuts Down Schools in Navi Mumbai

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Education (NMMC) Department has announced a holiday for all schools on July 9 due to heavy rain warnings. This includes both government and private schools.

Weather Alerts and Predictions

Dr. Kailas Shinde, Commissioner of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, stated, “Heavy rain warning has been received on July 9. For the safety of children, all schools of all mediums in the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation area should be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, July 9, 2024. The said order should be strictly implemented.”

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Mumbai, has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg for Monday. Red alerts have also been issued for Pune and Satara. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts heavy rainfall in Mumbai until July 12.

Impact on Mumbai

Mumbai recorded heavy rainfall on Monday morning, leading to traffic jams and waterlogging. IMD Director at Mumbai, Sunil Kamble, reported, “Around 270 mm of rainfall was recorded between 2 am and 6 am today. An ‘orange’ alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued in Mumbai for the next 24 hours. A ‘yellow’ alert for heavy rain has been issued for tomorrow.”

Ram Karan Yadav, General Manager of Central Railway, mentioned, “It has been raining heavily since Sunday night. More than 300 mm of rain has fallen in 6 hours. We are monitoring the situation and trying to keep the trains running.” He added that waterlogging has disrupted services on the main line and Harbour Line.

Flight and Train Disruptions

Flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) were affected due to heavy rainfall. Schools were shut down, and exams scheduled for today were cancelled.
