Heavy Rains Cause Flooding and Disruptions in Mumbai

Mumbai city recorded over 300 mm of rainfall in just six hours from 1 am to 7 am today, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This heavy rain led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas and disrupted suburban train services.

Impact on Transportation

Some trains were cancelled, and Central Railway suburban services were affected, particularly at Sion and between Bhandup and Nahur stations. The rainwater was above the tracks, causing trains to stop for nearly an hour. Although the water has receded slightly, services remain affected. Traffic on the sub-urban and Harbour Line trains was delayed, impacting stations like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Kurla-Vikhroli & Bhandup. Additionally, many Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses were diverted due to waterlogging.

School and College Closures

To avoid inconvenience to students, the BMC declared a holiday for the first session for all BMC, government, and private schools and colleges in Mumbai. The decision for the next session will be announced after reviewing the situation.

Waterlogged Areas

Water-logging was reported from Worli, Buntara Bhavan in Kurla East, King’s Circle area of Mumbai, Dadar, and Vidyavihar Railway Station. A commuter at King’s Circle mentioned, “My car is stuck on the road. There is no point in blaming the government for the rains. The government is doing its job.”

BMC’s Response

The BMC stated that its entire machinery is working in the field and requested Mumbaikars not to believe in rumors. They assured that all necessary measures are being taken to manage the situation.
