Pakistan’s Punjab Government Requests Social Media Ban During Muharram

The Punjab government in Pakistan has asked the country’s interior ministry to temporarily suspend social media platforms from July 6-11 during Muharram processions. This request aims to prevent the spread of hate speech and violence. The final decision rests with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Heightened security measures are in place, with army and Rangers personnel deployed in sensitive areas. The Punjab government has implemented Section 144 throughout the province to maintain public peace and order.

Muharram is a significant period for Shia Muslims, but it has also seen sectarian violence in Pakistan. Past incidents include bombings in Quetta, Karachi, and Rawalpindi, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries. The government aims to prevent extremist factions from using social media to incite violence during this sensitive time.
