Nvidia’s Vishal Dhupar Talks About India’s AI Mission and GPU Deals

Nvidia’s Managing Director of Asia South, Vishal Dhupar, has shown strong interest in India’s AI Mission. He mentioned that Nvidia, like any other player, would be keen to participate if given the opportunity.

During the Global India AI Summit 2024 in New Delhi, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the government will launch the India AI Mission in the next two to three months. This mission aims to help domestic companies procure computing power units to run AI systems. The government plans to procure over 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) through a public-private partnership to enhance industry efficiencies.

In March, the government approved the Rs 10,372-crore India AI Mission, which will deploy 10,000 GPUs. This initiative is expected to boost investments in the AI sector and help companies set up data centers in India. GPUs are specialized processors that accelerate the rendering of graphics and images, essential for AI processing.

MeitY Additional Secretary Abhishek Singh stated that the government has earmarked almost Rs 5,000 crore for providing more than 10,000 GPUs to support the creation of compute capacity under the mission. The government is also in the process of floating tenders for procuring compute capacity from different companies and will provide subsidies for accessing the chips.

Vishal Dhupar highlighted Nvidia’s efforts to expand its market in India through collaborations with Indian companies and educational institutions. He emphasized that Nvidia aims to tackle complex problems and create impactful innovations that can open new markets. Nvidia is renowned for making some of the best GPUs in the world, which are in high demand, driving its market value to USD 3.16 trillion, making it the third most valuable company after Microsoft and Apple. Many Indian companies, such as Reliance Group, Tata Group, and Yotta Infrastructure, have struck deals with Nvidia for its GPUs.
