Neeraj Chopra Leads 28-Member Indian Athletics Team to Paris 2024 Olympics
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has announced a 28-member Indian athletics team for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The team is led by Neeraj Chopra, the ‘Golden Boy’ and defending champion in men’s javelin throw. Neeraj made history by winning India’s first Olympic gold in track and field with a throw of 87.58m.
Team Highlights
Neeraj Chopra will be joined by Olympic debutant Kishore Jena in the men’s javelin throw event. Annu Rani, who won gold at the Asian Games last year, will compete in the women’s javelin throw event.
The squad includes eight athletes who participated in the Tokyo Olympics. Among them are:
- Avinash Sable (men’s 3000m steeplechase)
- Tajinderpal Singh Toor (men’s shot put)
- Priyanka Goswami (women’s race walk)
- Muhammed Anas, Amoj Jacob, and Subha Venkatesan (4x400m relay)
Muhammed Anas will make his third consecutive appearance at the Summer Games.
New Faces
Several athletes will make their Olympic debut, including:
- Jyothi Yarraji (100m hurdles)
- Abha Khatua (shot put)
- Parul Chaudhary (3000m steeplechase and 5000m race)
Parul Chaudhary is the only athlete competing in two individual events. She won gold in the 5000m race and silver in the 3000m steeplechase at the Asian Games last year.
Race Walk and Marathon
Akshdeep Singh, Vikash Singh, and Paramjeet Singh Bisht will compete in the men’s 20km race walk event. Suraj Panwar will participate in the mixed marathon event with Priyanka Goswami. Priyanka will also compete in the women’s 20km race walk event.
Murali Sreeshankar, who met the entry standard in men’s long jump, will miss the Olympics due to an injury.
