In Tonk, Rajasthan, violence erupted following an assault on a Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) at a polling station in the Deoli-Uniara assembly constituency. Ajmer Inspector General (IG) Om Prakash announced that the accused, including independent candidate Naresh Meena, have been arrested, and peace has been restored.

Arrests and Charges

IG Om Prakash stated that a case was registered under sections of attempt to murder and destruction of public property. About 60 people involved in the incident were arrested, including Naresh Meena. A total of four cases have been registered, and the situation is now peaceful.

Protests and Violence

Following Meena’s arrest, his supporters protested by setting fire to the state highway outside Samravata village. Tonk Superintendent of Police (SP) Vikas Sangwan reported that Meena initially resisted arrest but surrendered upon seeing the police force. Around 50-60 people have been detained in connection with the case.

Incident Details

The violence began when Meena allegedly slapped SDM Amit Chaudhary at a polling booth. The clash led to the vandalism and arson of several vehicles, including police cars, in Tonk district.

Political Reactions

Congress leader Ashok Gehlot criticized the ruling BJP government, claiming that the law and order situation in Rajasthan has collapsed. He questioned how such an incident could occur and accused the BJP of ignoring opposition suggestions.
