Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif Calls for $6.8 Trillion Climate Funding at COP29
During the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the need for $6.8 trillion in climate funding for developing countries by 2030. Speaking at a climate finance roundtable organized by Pakistan, Sharif highlighted the significant climate challenges faced by these nations and the lack of resources to address them. He urged developed countries to fulfill their financial commitments to help manage climate impacts.
Sharif pointed out the devastating floods in Pakistan as an example of the urgent need for climate finance. He called for an increase in the $100 billion annual climate finance goal set in 2009, given the escalating global climate impacts. During the summit, Sharif also participated in the “World Leaders’ Climate Action Summit” and met with various world leaders, including Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
In informal discussions, Sharif talked with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about international climate cooperation. He also met UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to discuss Pakistan-UK relations and engaged with Central Asian leaders on regional connectivity and environmental issues. Additionally, Sharif discussed South Asian climate challenges with Nepalese President Ram Chandra Poudel and Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
Accompanying Sharif were Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar and Romina Khurshid Alam, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change.
