Wanindu Hasaranga Misses ODI Series Against New Zealand Due to Injury
Colombo, Sri Lanka – Sri Lankan cricket star Wanindu Hasaranga will not participate in the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand due to a hamstring injury. This injury occurred during the second T20I match against New Zealand in Dambulla. Hasaranga, known for being Sri Lanka’s top wicket-taker in T20s, sustained the injury while bowling.
In his absence, Sri Lanka Cricket has selected Dushan Hemantha as his replacement. Hemantha has previously played five ODIs for Sri Lanka. Despite his injury, Hasaranga was named Player of the Series after taking six wickets in the two T20I matches, including four in the second game.
During the second T20I, Hasaranga’s performance helped Sri Lanka dismiss New Zealand for 108 runs. However, New Zealand managed to win the match by five runs, resulting in a 1-1 series draw. After the match, Hasaranga expressed his disappointment about the injury, stating, “Finally, I can have a few weeks’ break after this match. I think it is bad. I wanted to bowl my four overs to cut down their total. I can’t run, so I tried to maximise (while batting) but I got out.”
This is not the first time Hasaranga has faced injury issues, as he previously injured the same hamstring in August during a series against India. Additionally, New Zealand’s Lockie Ferguson will also miss the series due to a calf injury, with Adam Milne stepping in as his replacement. The ODI series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand is set to begin on November 13.
