Sudan War Causes Massive Refugee Crisis
Over 3 Million Flee to Neighboring Countries
The ongoing war in Sudan has resulted in a severe crisis, with over 3 million people fleeing to neighboring countries for safety, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Dominique Hyde, UNHCR’s Director for External Relations, highlighted the dire situation at a press conference in Geneva.
Displacement and Human Rights Violations
Hyde reported that the displacement levels from Sudan are unprecedented, with 60,000 Sudanese arriving in Chad last October due to conflict in Darfur. Many refugees have faced human rights violations, with 71% of those arriving in Chad having experienced such atrocities while escaping Sudan.
Impact on Neighboring Countries
Countries in the region are struggling to cope with the influx of refugees. Chad, now home to over 700,000 Sudanese refugees, is experiencing the largest refugee influx in its history. Most of these refugees are women and children. Egypt, the largest host country, is accommodating 1.2 million new Sudanese refugees, as per the latest government figures.
