Green Park Stadium in Kanpur Receives Demerit Point from ICC
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has rated the outfield at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur as “unsatisfactory,” resulting in one demerit point for the venue. This decision follows a rain-affected Test match between India and Bangladesh, where only 35 overs were played on the first day, and no play occurred on the second and third days, despite no rain on the third day.
While the outfield was criticized, the pitch itself received a “satisfactory” rating. India managed to take all 20 wickets of Bangladesh in 121.2 overs, striving for a result despite the weather challenges.
The Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) is responsible for maintaining Green Park Stadium, which is owned by the UP government. BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla defended the stadium, highlighting its 80-year history as a “heritage ground” and a permanent Test centre. He noted that this was the first time in 80 years that rain had disrupted a match for two days.
Shukla addressed the criticism, stating, “Criticism is one thing we are used to in the administration of the BCCI in cricket. But everything is being criticised.” He emphasized the importance of hosting Test matches at this historic venue.
