Gurugram Society Uses Artificial Rain to Combat Air Pollution
In Gurugram, Haryana, a unique method was employed to tackle air pollution. The Resident Welfare Association (RWA) of DLF Primus Society in Sector-82 initiated ‘artificial rain’ using sprinklers from their 32-storey high-rise building. Achal Yadav, the RWA President, stated that this method would be used daily if the Air Quality Index (AQI) worsens. The society is also promoting car-pooling to reduce pollution.
Yadav emphasized the need for collective action, saying, “The government alone cannot do this work. Everyone will have to participate in it. Pollution is a huge problem.”
Government’s New Rules on Stubble Burning
On the same day, the Central government announced amendments to the Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas Rules of 2023. These amendments focus on imposing environmental compensation for stubble burning. Farmers with less than two acres of land will pay Rs 5,000, those with two to five acres will pay Rs 10,000, and those with more than five acres will pay Rs 30,000. This decision aims to address the severe pollution levels in Delhi, where the AQI has surpassed 400, as reported by SAFAR India.
