US President Joe Biden has granted pardons to around 2,000 American veterans who were convicted of engaging in gay sex under a military code that was in place for over 60 years. This code, known as Article 125 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, made it a crime to engage in ‘unnatural carnal copulation’ with another person, even with mutual consent. The law was repealed in 2013.

In his statement, President Biden said, ‘Today, I am righting a historic wrong by using my clemency authority to pardon many former service members who were convicted simply for being themselves.’ He highlighted the courage and sacrifice of LGBTQI+ service members who were forced out of the military due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jeane-Pierre also commented on the progress, stating, ‘Every member of our military deserves to feel safe and respected. Today, @POTUS announced pardons for many LGBTQI+ service members convicted because of their sexual orientation or gender identity – making progress in righting a historic wrong.’

This proclamation is part of President Biden’s broader efforts to address injustices and promote equality. Throughout his presidency, he has used his clemency powers to pardon nonviolent drug offenders and address racial disparities in drug sentencing.

Biden concluded his statement by saying that the proclamation is ‘about dignity, decency and ensuring the culture of our armed forces reflect the values that make us an exceptional nation.’
