Maharashtra Elections: Seat-Sharing Tensions Among Congress, Shiv Sena, and NCP
In Maharashtra, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, consisting of Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (SP), is facing challenges in finalizing seat-sharing for the upcoming assembly elections. The nomination deadline is approaching, and overlapping claims on several seats have caused friction, particularly between Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT).
Initially, the three parties agreed to contest 85 seats each in the 288-member assembly. However, Congress later announced candidates for 99 seats, leading to disagreements. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut warned Congress against fielding a candidate in Solapur (South), fearing it could lead to similar actions from other alliance members.
There are also differences over projecting a Chief Ministerial candidate, with Shiv Sena (UBT) in favor, but Congress and NCP (SP) opposing the idea. The Samajwadi Party (SP) is also awaiting a response from MVA regarding seat-sharing, emphasizing the need to avoid dividing secular votes.
Disagreements have arisen over seats in Mumbai, Vidarbha, and other areas like Colaba and Malabar Hill. If unresolved, these could lead to rebel candidates. Meanwhile, the ruling Mahayuti alliance, including BJP, seems to be managing internal pressures effectively.
