UN Security Council to Discuss Israel-Iran Tensions

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is set to hold an emergency meeting on Monday following recent military actions between Israel and Iran. This meeting, chaired by Switzerland for the month, is being convened at Iran’s request, with support from China, Algeria, and Russia.

Background of the Conflict

Earlier this month, Israel conducted airstrikes on Iranian targets in response to an attack by Iran. The strikes targeted areas in Khuzestan, Ilam, and around Tehran, resulting in the deaths of four Iranian military officers and one civilian. Iran’s air defense managed to intercept most of the missiles.

Iran’s Response

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has called on the UNSC to condemn Israel’s actions, emphasizing the need for a decisive stance against what he describes as “continuous and systematic” aggressions by Israel. Iran’s President, Masoud Pezeshkian, stated that while Tehran does not seek war, it will respond appropriately to the attacks.

Statements from Iranian Leaders

Major General Hossein Salami, Commander-in-Chief of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, confirmed the casualties from the strikes. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, urged authorities to convey Iran’s strength to Israel, criticizing the international community for not stopping Israel’s actions in Gaza and Lebanon.

Israel’s Position

Israel reported that its airstrikes targeted missile manufacturing facilities and other military capabilities in Iran, concluding its response to Iran’s earlier missile attack. The Israeli military stated that the mission was successful, with all warplanes returning safely.
