Ajit Pawar and Yugendra Pawar Face Off in Baramati Assembly Elections

In Pune, Maharashtra, Ajit Pawar, the Deputy Chief Minister and leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), has filed his nomination for the Baramati assembly seat. Confident about his chances, Ajit Pawar stated, “Everyone has the right to contest. Whenever any candidate is fielded against me, I take them as a strong candidate and campaign accordingly. This time too, the people of Baramati will elect me, and I have faith in them.”

Interestingly, Ajit Pawar’s nephew, Yugendra Pawar, is also contesting from the same constituency as an NCP-SP candidate. This sets the stage for another Pawar versus Pawar contest, reminiscent of the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, where Supriya Sule, daughter of Sharad Pawar, defeated Sunetra Pawar, Ajit Pawar’s wife.

Yugendra Pawar expressed his feelings about contesting against his uncle, who has won the seat seven times, saying, “I feel it is quite sad, quite unfortunate that this had to come in the family. Not in Vidhan Sabha but it started in Lok Sabha and we were always together.” He emphasized the importance of staying with Sharad Pawar, the NCP founder and family patriarch, stating that it was due to him that Baramati and its surroundings prospered.

Yugendra Pawar acknowledged the challenge of running against his uncle, noting, “I don’t think it will be tough but I don’t even think that it will be easy either.” He believes that the people of Baramati will continue to support Sharad Pawar, as they did in the Lok Sabha elections.

The Maharashtra Assembly elections are scheduled for November 20, with results for all 288 constituencies to be announced on November 23. In the previous elections, the BJP, Shiv Sena, and Congress secured varying numbers of seats, with the BJP leading in both 2019 and 2014.
