Bhubaneswar Police to Wear Body Cameras for Accountability
In Bhubaneswar, Odisha, a new initiative requires police station reception desk in-charges to wear body cameras. This decision, led by Police Commissioner Suresh Dev Datta Singh, aims to ensure accountability and transparency in police interactions with the public.
Reason for the Initiative
The move comes after an incident on September 15, where an Army Major and his female friend were allegedly harassed by police at Bharatpur station. Instead of addressing their complaint, the police reportedly mistreated them, leading to the woman’s unjustified detention.
Government Response
The Odisha government, emphasizing its ‘zero tolerance’ policy on violence against women, has suspended five police officials, including the Inspector in Charge of Bharatpur station. A Crime Branch investigation has been ordered.
