Punjab BJP Leaders Meet Governor Over Paddy Procurement Issues Amid Farmer Protests

Punjab BJP Leaders Address Paddy Procurement Issues

In Chandigarh, Punjab, a group of leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) met with the Governor to discuss the ongoing paddy procurement issues. They submitted a memorandum highlighting the problems faced during the Kharif Marketing season, which began on October 1.

Government’s Inefficiency

The Punjab government received Rs 44,000 crore from the Central government for paddy purchase. However, due to inefficiencies, most of the paddy remains uncollected from the mandis even after 26 days. The memorandum criticized the government’s failure to arrange necessary resources like gunny bags and labor contracts.

Rice Milling Agreement Issues

A significant issue is the government’s inability to secure agreements with 5,500 rice millers for paddy milling, exacerbating the crisis. BJP leader Praneet Kaur urged the Governor to prompt the Chief Minister and Food Minister to address the farmers’ concerns.

Farmer Protests

Farmers have been protesting for two days, demanding solutions to the paddy procurement issues. They organized roadblocks in various parts of Punjab, including Sangrur, Moga, Phagwara, and Batla. The Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee and Sanyukta Kisan Morcha participated in the protests.
