Pakistan International Airlines Faces Challenges with Fleet and Privatization

Pakistan International Airlines Faces Challenges

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is experiencing difficulties as its fleet has decreased from 33 to 16 operational aircraft. This reduction is due to technical issues and alleged negligence by the management, particularly in the engineering department. Many planes are grounded because of a lack of spare parts and engine checks.

PIA is under a massive debt burden of approximately USD 2.9 billion, despite receiving multiple government bailouts. The government plans to privatize the airline, with the final auction scheduled for October 30. This move aligns with the International Monetary Fund’s recommendations to sell loss-making state-owned enterprises to stabilize the economy. Six bidders have pre-qualified for the sale.

Privatization Process

Pakistan’s Parliamentary Secretary for Communication, Gul Asghar Khan, informed the parliament about the privatization process, which began in February 2024. The process is detailed and conducted under an elaborate structure, aiming to relieve the national exchequer from the financial burden caused by PIA.
