Taiwan’s First Night-Time Military Drills Against Potential Chinese Invasion

On October 26, Taiwan’s defense command conducted its first-ever night-time live-fire exercises to prepare for a possible invasion by China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA). The drills took place in the southern part of Penghu County, simulating a surprise nighttime attack by the PLA. The exercises included aerial, naval, and ground simulations, with soldiers using night-vision gear and firing live ammunition along the beaches.

Ground operations featured CM-21 armored vehicles and M60A3 tanks, while the army responded to a simulated aerial invasion with flares and 120-millimeter mortars. Naval simulations involved scenarios where the PLA navy might disguise as fishermen, prompting land-to-sea ammunition firing. The Coast Guard Administration informed local fishermen about the live-fire drills near Wude.

The exercises spanned 18 locations, using over 32,000 rounds of ammunition. Army officials noted challenges such as sand blown by strong winds and visibility issues at night. Earlier, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te reassured the public of the government’s commitment to national security amid China’s military exercises around Taiwan.

Taiwan has been self-governed since 1949, but China views it as part of its territory, asserting that reunification is inevitable, even by force if necessary.
