Supreme Court Directs Delhi High Court on Sharjeel Imam’s Bail Plea
The Supreme Court of India has instructed the Delhi High Court to quickly decide on the bail plea of Sharjeel Imam, who is involved in the 2020 Delhi riots case. Imam is charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). A bench of Justices Bela Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma refused to entertain Imam’s bail plea directly under Article 32 of the Constitution, dismissing it and urging the Delhi High Court to expedite the decision.
Senior advocate Siddhartha Dave, representing Imam, mentioned that the bail plea has been pending since April 2022 and has been listed for hearing over 60 times before seven different benches. The Delhi High Court had previously rejected Imam’s request for an early hearing on September 4. Imam was arrested by Delhi police in 2020 and is considered the main conspirator in the riots case.
