On October 24, the central government announced that Justice Sanjeev Khanna will become the next Chief Justice of India, starting November 11. This follows the retirement of the current Chief Justice, DY Chandrachud, on November 10. Justice Khanna will be the 51st Chief Justice of India.

The Ministry of Law and Justice released a notification stating that the President, under Article 124 of the Constitution, has appointed Justice Khanna, a current Supreme Court Judge, to this prestigious position. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal confirmed the appointment on social media, noting the President’s decision after consulting with the current Chief Justice.

Justice Khanna, the second-most senior judge in the Supreme Court, was recommended by Chief Justice Chandrachud as his successor. He is expected to serve a six-month term until May 2025.

Justice Khanna’s Career

Born on May 14, 1960, Justice Khanna began his legal career in 1983. He practiced in district courts and later in the Delhi High Court, covering various legal fields. He served as senior standing counsel for the Income Tax Department and represented the National Capital Territory of Delhi. He was appointed as an Additional Judge in the Delhi High Court in 2005 and became a Permanent Judge in 2006. In 2019, he joined the Supreme Court, recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium for his merit and integrity.
