On Thursday, Gujarat welcomed Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón for the inauguration of the Tata-Airbus manufacturing facility in Vadodara. This event marks a significant step in enhancing bilateral cooperation between India and Spain.

Gujarat: A Hub for Spanish Trade

Gujarat, with its strategic location and robust industrial infrastructure, has become a key hub for trade between India and Spain. The state’s ports, like Mundra and Kandla, have facilitated increased trade, attracting Spanish investments in sectors such as automotive, renewable energy, and manufacturing.

Several Spanish companies have established a presence in Gujarat. Grupo Antolin set up a facility in Sanand in 2015, while Siemens Gamesa and Windar Renovables have plants in Halol. Trustin Tape, a joint venture, opened a production center in Dahej in 2018, and Iberchem has operated in Changodar since 2010.

Defense Cooperation and Exports

The Tata-Airbus project highlights growing defense cooperation, with 40 out of 56 C295 military aircraft to be produced in India. Gujarat’s exports to Spain, including chemicals and machinery, reached USD 0.94 billion in 2023-24.

Cultural and Educational Exchanges

Beyond trade, Gujarat and Spain have fostered cultural and educational exchanges. Spanish businesses have contributed to Gujarat’s infrastructure, while interest in Spanish culture is growing among Gujaratis.

India-Spain Trade Relations

India and Spain enjoy a strong trade relationship, with trade volumes reaching USD 7.24 billion in 2023-24. Spain is India’s sixth-largest trade partner in the EU, with significant cross-border collaboration in IT, pharmaceuticals, and engineering.

As Gujarat welcomes Pedro Sánchez, the state aims to further expand trade, investment, and cultural ties with Spain, paving the way for mutual prosperity.
