Nikhil Kumaraswamy to Contest Channapatna By-Poll

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has announced Nikhil Kumaraswamy, son of Union Minister and Karnataka JD(S) chief HD Kumaraswamy, as their candidate for the upcoming Channapatna by-poll. Nikhil, who is also the JD(S) State Youth Unit President, will face CP Yogeshwara, a recent Congress member, in the election.

Background

HD Kumaraswamy previously defeated Yogeshwara in the 2018 and 2023 assembly polls from Channapatna. The seat became vacant after HD Kumaraswamy won from the Mandya parliamentary segment in the last Lok Sabha elections.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa announced Nikhil’s candidacy during a press conference, expressing confidence in winning all three seats in the upcoming by-polls. He stated, “We have announced Nikhil Kumaraswamy as NDA candidate. We are going to win all three seats…”

Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy added that the decision was made with the blessings of BS Yediyurappa and other leaders, emphasizing that it was not solely his decision but also due to party workers’ pressure.

Nikhil Kumaraswamy expressed his confidence in the Channapatna constituency, stating, “I have a lot of confidence in the Channapatna constituency people. They will bless me.”

Meanwhile, Congress candidate Yogeshwara filed his nomination for the by-poll in the presence of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar.

Election Schedule

The Election Commission of India announced by-polls for 48 Assembly constituencies and two Parliamentary seats, scheduled in two phases alongside the Maharashtra and Jharkhand Assembly elections. Voting for the first phase will occur on November 13, and the second phase on November 20, with counting on November 23.
