Chandrakant Patil Discusses Waqf Bill and Upcoming Maharashtra Elections
Chandrakant Patil, a minister in Maharashtra and a candidate from the Kothrud assembly seat for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), expressed concerns about the Waqf amendment bill being sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee. He mentioned that this decision made people feel betrayed, leading them to support the BJP with a significant majority in the upcoming state assembly elections.
Patil compared the situation to the swift passage of Article 370’s abrogation, which was completed in a single day. He noted that the lack of seats in the Lok Sabha contributed to the delay in the Waqf bill’s passage. Patil emphasized that voters are now more attentive and determined to support the BJP.
On Thursday, Patil filed his nomination for the assembly elections after paying respects at the Vinayak Damodar Savarkar memorial in Pune. He highlighted his ongoing commitment to serving the people of Kothrud and addressing their concerns.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, aims to introduce reforms such as digitizing records, enhancing audits, and reclaiming illegally occupied waqf properties. The Maharashtra assembly elections are set for November 20, with results to be announced on November 23. The main contest is between the Mahayuti alliance, including BJP, NCP (Ajit Pawar), and Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde), and the Maha Vikas Agadhi alliance, comprising Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (Sharad Pawar).
In the 2019 elections, BJP secured 105 seats, Shiv Sena 56, and Congress 44.
