Rajakbhai Kumbhar Sentenced in Espionage Case

A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Lucknow has sentenced Rajakbhai Kumbhar from West Kachchh, Gujarat, in a Pakistan-backed espionage case. Kumbhar received a maximum sentence of six years of rigorous imprisonment under the Indian Penal Code and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, along with a fine. If the fine is not paid, an additional month of imprisonment will be added for each charge.

Previously, Md Rashid from Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh, was sentenced in the same case. Rashid was accused of sharing sensitive photographs of Indian defense locations and army movements with Pakistan’s ISI agents. The case was initially registered by the Anti-Terrorist Squad in Lucknow and later taken over by the NIA in April 2020. Rashid was chargesheeted in July 2020, and a supplementary chargesheet against Kumbhar was filed in February 2021.

The NIA’s investigation revealed that Kumbhar conspired with Rashid and ISI agents to conduct terrorist activities and conceal their plans. Kumbhar provided funds to Rashid in exchange for the sensitive photographs sent to ISI agents.
