Jamil Maqsood Condemns 1947 Pakistan Incursion into Jammu and Kashmir
In Brussels, Jamil Maqsood, President of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the United Kashmir People’s National Party (UKPNP), spoke at an event organized by UKPNP-Belgium. He criticized Pakistan’s military incursion into Jammu and Kashmir on October 22, 1947. The event was led by Aqeel Ahmed and moderated by Abdul Basit, with Maqsood as the Chief Guest.
Maqsood explained the historical context of the invasion, where armed tribal militias, allegedly supported by the Pakistani military, entered Jammu and Kashmir to annex it to Pakistan after the partition of British India. This led to the first India-Pakistan war and the ongoing division of the region.
He highlighted the consequences of this aggression, noting the Line of Control as a heavily militarized border causing suffering to locals. Maqsood criticized Pakistan’s control over Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir (PoJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (PoGB), arguing that “Azad” Jammu and Kashmir lacks true autonomy.
Maqsood expressed concern over the lack of representation for PoGB residents in the Pakistani Parliament, leading to neglect of their rights. He reaffirmed UKPNP’s commitment to reunifying Jammu and Kashmir and called for demilitarization and a peaceful resolution respecting Kashmiri aspirations.
He urged the international community to recognize the historical injustices in PoJK and press Pakistan for genuine autonomy and self-governance in the regions it controls.
