US Aims for Strong Ties with India, Brazil, and South Africa Amid BRICS Summit
Washington, DC [US], October 23: The United States is committed to maintaining a strong and positive relationship with India, Brazil, and South Africa. During a media briefing, US Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel emphasized the US’s bilateral work with these countries in key areas. He also highlighted the US’s intention to manage its relationship and competition with China responsibly.
When asked about the BRICS Summit, Patel stated, “We believe all countries are sovereign and make their own choices about associations. The US focuses on building broad coalitions to achieve shared goals.” He added that the US aims to enhance its value proposition through investments and partnerships, utilizing multilateral institutions like the UN, G20, APEC, and ASEAN.
Patel noted that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken prioritizes engagement with BRICS nations. He reiterated the US’s commitment to a strong relationship with Brazil, South Africa, and India, working bilaterally in areas defining the 21st century. Regarding China, Patel mentioned the goal of managing the relationship responsibly, while continuing to oppose Russian aggression.
The 16th BRICS Summit, chaired by Russia, is themed “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security.” It provides a platform for leaders to discuss global issues. Patel addressed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ participation in the BRICS Summit, emphasizing the UN’s role in holding Russia accountable for its actions in Ukraine.
BRICS, originally BRIC, began in 2006 with Russia, India, and China. South Africa joined in 2010, and the group expanded in 2024 with new members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
