The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made significant progress in the October 2022 ISIS-inspired car bomb blast case in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, by arresting three more individuals. This brings the total number of arrests to 18. The recent arrests include Aboo Hanifa, Saran Mariappan, and Pavas Rahman, who are suspected of being involved in terror financing related to the case.

The case, identified as RC-01/2022/NIA/CHE, involves a Vehicle Borne IED (VBIED) explosion near the Arulmigu Kottai Sangameshwarar Thirukovil temple on Eswaran Kovil Street, Ukkadam, Coimbatore, on October 23, 2022. The attack was carried out by Jamesha Mubeen, a self-proclaimed ISIS operative and suicide bomber, as an act of revenge against non-believers of Islam.

NIA’s investigation revealed that the three newly arrested individuals collaborated to fund the terror act. Aboo Hanifa, who worked as a faculty member at Kovai Arabic College, was involved in radicalizing Jamesha Mubeen and others in ISIS ideology. Before the attack, Mubeen had pledged allegiance to Abu-Al-Hasan Al-Hashimi Al-Qurashi, the then leader of ISIS.

In addition to the main case, a related investigation into radicalization has led to the arrest and chargesheeting of four more individuals. The NIA continues to investigate the case further.
