The BRICS Summit is taking place in Kazan, Russia, on October 22-23, under the chairmanship of Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to meet several world leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, Turkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. These meetings are part of the summit’s agenda to discuss global issues and strengthen multilateralism.

Putin’s Scheduled Meetings

According to Yury Ushakov, Putin’s foreign policy aide, the meetings will begin on October 22. Putin will first meet with New Development Bank President Dilma Rousseff, followed by discussions with PM Modi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. Further meetings are planned with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, and other leaders.

Prime Minister Modi’s Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a two-day visit to Russia to attend the 16th BRICS Summit. He is visiting at the invitation of President Putin. The summit provides a platform for leaders to assess BRICS initiatives and explore future collaboration opportunities.

BRICS, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, plays a significant role in the global economy. President Putin highlighted that BRICS countries are key drivers of global economic growth. In 2023, BRICS accounted for 37.4% of global GDP, surpassing the G7’s 29.3%. The summit aims to further enhance socio-economic growth and sustainable development.
