India and China Reach Agreement on Patrolling in Eastern Ladakh
In a significant development, India and China have agreed on new patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. This agreement comes ahead of the BRICS Summit, which will be attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Foreign Secretary’s Announcement
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced the agreement during a media briefing before PM Modi’s visit to Russia for the BRICS Summit. He stated that discussions with Chinese officials have led to this agreement, which aims to resolve issues that arose after Chinese military actions in eastern Ladakh in 2020.
Resolution of Standoffs
Misri highlighted that discussions through the Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) and military meetings have previously resolved standoffs at various locations. The new agreement is expected to lead to disengagement and resolution of remaining issues.
Future Prospects
While details of PM Modi’s bilateral meetings at the BRICS Summit are not yet available, the agreement may facilitate a meeting between him and President Xi Jinping. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized the importance of peace and respect for the LAC in restoring normal bilateral relations.
BRICS Summit in Russia
PM Modi will attend the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, on October 22-23. The Summit, themed ‘Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,’ will provide a platform for leaders to discuss global issues and assess BRICS initiatives.
