Bangladesh Nationalist Party Criticizes Interim Government Over Election Delays
In Dhaka, Bangladesh, the Senior Joint Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, has expressed dissatisfaction with the interim government for not announcing a date for the upcoming elections. Rizvi accused the government of leading the country into a deadlock by failing to provide a clear timeline for electoral reforms and completion. Speaking at a rally in Bera upazila of Pabna, Rizvi stated, “You are talking about reforms under the interim government, but each of you provides a different statement on when elections will be held. You are not giving a definitive date for when your reforms will be complete.”
Meanwhile, Dr. Asif Nazrul, an advisor to the interim government, suggested that the next general election might occur in 2025, depending on several factors such as the formation of a search committee, election commission, and voter list preparation. He mentioned that if these conditions are met, elections could be possible next year.
Bangladesh is currently experiencing a volatile political climate following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina on August 5, amid widespread protests led by students against a government job quota system. These protests escalated into a significant anti-government movement, resulting in the establishment of an interim government. During this period, violence and chaos, particularly against minorities, have been reported, with over 600 people losing their lives in the clashes. On August 8, Nobel laureate economist Muhammad Yunus was appointed as the head of the interim government, which has since expanded military powers to maintain internal security.
