BJP’s Samik Bhattacharya Criticizes TMC Amid Protests Over RG Kar Medical College Incident

In Kolkata, BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya has accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of feeling pressured by ongoing protests led by junior doctors. These protests are in response to the rape and murder case at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Bhattacharya claims that TMC is attempting to halt the protests by imposing conditions, which he believes will not resolve the issue.

Protests and Hunger Strike

On Sunday, various groups supported the junior doctors who are on an indefinite hunger strike demanding justice for the victim. The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front organized a 21 km protest march in Kolkata, with participants from diverse backgrounds. Dr. Aqeeb stated, “We will not back down from the strike until ‘Abhaya’ receives justice.” The hunger strike has reached its 15th day, highlighting calls for justice and healthcare reform.

Political Tensions

The incident has intensified political tensions between the BJP and the state government, with the BJP demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The West Bengal government has urged the junior doctors to end their strike and invited them to meet with the Chief Minister on October 21 at Nabanna. Chief Secretary Manoj Pant conveyed the Chief Minister’s concern for the health of those on strike and invited them to a meeting, provided the strike is called off.
