Bangladesh Nationalist Party Criticizes Interim Government Over Election Delays
In Dhaka, Bangladesh, the Senior Joint Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, has expressed dissatisfaction with the interim government for not announcing a date for the upcoming elections. Rizvi accused the government of leading the country into a deadlock by failing to provide a timeline for necessary reforms and elections.
Speaking at a rally in Bera upazila of Pabna, Rizvi stated, “You are talking about reforms under the interim government, but each of you provides a different statement on when elections will be held. You are not giving a definitive date for when your reforms will be complete.” He urged the government to undertake necessary reforms and arrange elections promptly.
On the other hand, Dr. Asif Nazrul, an advisor to the interim government, mentioned that the next general election might occur in 2025, depending on several factors such as the formation of a search committee, election commission, and preparation of a voter list.
Bangladesh is currently experiencing a fluid political situation following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina on August 5 amid widespread protests. These protests, initially led by students against a quota system for government jobs, escalated into a significant anti-government movement. The interim government, led by Nobel laureate economist Muhammad Yunus, has expanded military powers to maintain internal security.
During this period of unrest, over 600 people have died, and there have been reports of violence targeting minorities, including Hindus.
