Joshua Cheptegei Triumphs at Delhi Half Marathon

Olympian Joshua Cheptegei celebrated a significant victory at the Delhi Half Marathon, held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The event, featuring a prize purse of USD 260,000, saw Cheptegei winning his first half marathon in a time of 59 minutes and 46 seconds. He expressed his joy, stating, “It’s really special to come here and be among the winners.”

Kenya’s Alex Matata led most of the race, with Nicholas Kipkorir, a bronze medalist in the 5 km World Championships, also competing. Matata finished second with a time of 59:53, while Kipkorir secured third place at 59:59. The race is known for its fast times, with past editions seeing multiple runners finishing under 60 minutes.

Cheptegei, who has multiple world titles, shared his excitement, “This win in Delhi was special to me because it is my first-ever victory in a Half Marathon. India has been important for my career, and this country now means a lot to me.” Despite a slow start and some foot issues, he managed to catch up and overtake his competitors, finishing strong.

Former world champion Muktar Edris from Ethiopia finished fifth, while Tanzania’s Alphonce Simbu came in fourth. Cheptegei looks forward to continuing his success in future races.
