Protests Erupt in Hyderabad Over Alleged Temple Vandalism

In Hyderabad, Telangana, a large protest took place at the Shri Muthyalamma Devi Temple on Saturday. The protest was in response to the alleged vandalism of a temple idol. The Telangana Police had to use lathi-charge to control the crowd.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal had called for a statewide ‘bandh’ to protest against the alleged attacks on Hindu temples in Telangana. Many Hindu organizations supported the protests, expressing concerns over the safety of Hindu temples.

VHP National Spokesperson Vinod Bansal announced that protests would occur in all district centers across the state. Hyderabad had already seen two incidents of idol vandalism, leading to protests from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other groups.

The first incident involved a Durga idol at Nampally Exhibition Grounds, where a vagabond accidentally damaged the idol while searching for food. The second incident at the Muthyalamma temple in Secunderabad led to widespread protests. BJP leaders, including Union Minister G Kishan Reddy, visited the temple and condemned the act.

One person, Salman Salim Thakur, was caught by locals and handed over to the police. He had come to Hyderabad for a personality development workshop. BJP leaders are demanding an NIA investigation into the incidents.
