On Thursday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin visited the rain-affected areas in Chennai’s Kolathur Assembly Constituency. He distributed relief materials and assured that the Tamil Nadu Government is prepared to handle any situation, with precautionary measures in place across the state.

Government’s Response to Heavy Rainfall

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader TKS Elangovan highlighted the quick recession of water, attributing it to the government’s efforts over the past two years. He mentioned that during previous administrations, such as under Jayalalitha, similar problems occurred, but the current measures have proven effective.

Elangovan also noted that all DMK ministers were actively assessing the flood situation and providing relief to the public. Several areas in Chennai experienced extremely heavy rainfall, with Kathivakkam and Manali recording 23 cm and 21 cm, respectively, and Cholavaram, Red Hills, and Avadi recording 30 cm, 28 cm, and 25 cm.

Weather Update

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that a depression over the Bay of Bengal moved west-northwest and crossed the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh coasts. It weakened into a low-pressure area over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and north coastal Tamil Nadu.

Relief Efforts

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, along with party leaders, distributed relief materials to sanitation workers. He expressed gratitude to the public and workers for their cooperation, ensuring no rainwater stagnation in Chennai and surrounding areas. He assured readiness to face further rain.

Heavy rains have caused flooding, traffic congestion, and disruption of public transport in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu.
