In Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, two out of five individuals arrested in connection with recent violence were injured during an encounter with the police. The Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police, Prashant Kumar, confirmed that the situation is now under control. The injured, Sarfaraz and Mohammad Talib, were shot in the leg while attempting to flee to Nepal. The police were recovering weapons near the India-Nepal border when the incident occurred. Three others, Abdul Hameed, Fahim, and Abdul Afzal, were also arrested.

Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav criticized the state government, accusing it of using encounters to mask administrative failures. He questioned the handling of the situation and expressed support for the victims’ families. Congress leaders also condemned the government, with UP Congress President Ajay Rai and MP Imran Masood highlighting the need for accountability for those responsible for the violence.

SP Bahraich, Vrinda Shukla, explained that the police acted in self-defense when Sarfaraz and Talib fired at them. The two are receiving medical treatment, and a search is ongoing for other suspects. The violence erupted during a Durga idol immersion procession, resulting in the death of Ramgopal Mishra and injuries to several others.
