Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently testified at a foreign interference inquiry, stating that Canada had shared intelligence, not hard evidence, with India regarding the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Trudeau claimed that India demanded evidence, but Canada only had intelligence at the time. The relationship between the two countries has deteriorated since Trudeau accused India of involvement in Nijjar’s death, which India has denied, calling the allegations “absurd” and “motivated.”
Nijjar, labeled a terrorist by India’s National Investigation Agency in 2020, was killed outside a Gurdwara in Surrey last year. Trudeau also alleged that information about Canadians opposing the Modi government was passed to India, leading to violence through criminal organizations. He mentioned that Indian diplomats were asked to leave after refusing to waive diplomatic immunity for questioning.
India expelled six Canadian diplomats and withdrew its High Commissioner to Canada, citing safety concerns due to the Trudeau government’s actions. India rejected Canada’s claims that Indian diplomats were “persons of interest” in an investigation, labeling them as politically motivated. The Indian government accused Trudeau of supporting extremism and violence against India.
