Kaziranga National Park: A New Butterfly Haven
In an exciting discovery, Kaziranga National Park has been identified as India’s second-largest hub for butterfly diversity, boasting over 446 species. This achievement follows years of research by Dr. Monsoon Jyoti Gogoi, a dedicated scientist from Kaziranga.
Butterfly Conservation Meet-2024
The first-ever “Butterfly Conservation Meet-2024” took place from September 27 to 29, drawing around 40 butterfly enthusiasts from across India. Participants included representatives from North Eastern Hill University, Cotton University, and various Assam colleges, among others. The event focused on sharing detailed butterfly records and discussing the status of these beautiful insects.
Key Highlights
Gaurab Nandi Das from the Czech Republic delivered a captivating presentation on “Taxonomy of Butterflies,” providing deep insights into the subject. Attendees also observed 85 butterfly species in the Kaziranga-Karbi Anglong landscape, particularly in the Panbari Reserve Forest.
Dr. Gogoi launched a new pictorial guidebook documenting 446 butterfly species in Kaziranga, including 18 new records for India. These include species like the Burmese Threering and Glassy Cerulean.
Significance of the Discovery
Kaziranga now ranks second in butterfly species diversity among India’s protected areas, following Namdapha National Park. This is notable given Kaziranga’s location outside the Himalayan and Patkai mountain ranges.
The Butterfly Conservation Meet aims to raise awareness about butterfly conservation in Kaziranga, encouraging further research and habitat protection. This initiative ensures butterflies become a key part of Kaziranga’s conservation efforts, alongside its famous “Big Five” animals.
