Congress Party Declines to Join Jammu and Kashmir Government
Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir: The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Chief, Tariq Hameed Karra, announced that the Congress party will not be joining the newly formed Jammu and Kashmir government. This decision comes as a response to the unfulfilled promises of restoring statehood to the region, despite repeated assurances from the Prime Minister.
In a statement, Karra emphasized, “Congress Party is not joining the Ministry in Jammu and Kashmir government at the moment. Congress has strongly demanded from the Centre to restore Statehood to J-K, besides the Prime Minister has time and again in public meetings promised the same. But the Statehood has not been restored to J-K.”
Meanwhile, Omar Abdullah, Vice President of the National Conference, was sworn in as the first Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The oath of office was administered by L-G Manoj Saxena at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre in Srinagar.
Several leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, attended the swearing-in ceremony. Other notable attendees included leaders from the INDIA Bloc, such as Akhilesh Yadav, Prakash Karat, Supriya Sule, Kanimozhi, Sanjay Singh, and D Raja. PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti was also present.
In the recent assembly elections, the Congress-National Conference alliance secured 48 seats, with the National Conference winning 42 and Congress six seats. This marks the first elected government in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganization of the state into Union Territories.
