Omar Abdullah Sworn in as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir

On October 16, Omar Abdullah, Vice President of the National Conference, was sworn in as the first Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The ceremony took place at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre in Srinagar, where Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha administered the oath of office to Abdullah and his council of ministers.

Several notable figures attended the swearing-in ceremony, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Leaders from the INDIA Bloc, such as Akhilesh Yadav, Prakash Karat, Supriya Sule, Kanimozhi, Sanjay Singh, and D Raja, were also present. PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti attended as well.

Formation of the New Government

The new government was formed after the Congress-National Conference alliance secured 48 seats in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections. This marks the first elected government in the region since the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganization of the state into two Union Territories.

Omar Abdullah’s Political Legacy

Omar Abdullah comes from a prominent political family. His grandfather, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, was the first Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir after its accession to India. Omar’s father, Farooq Abdullah, served as Chief Minister three times. Omar himself was Chief Minister from 2009 to 2015 and served as Union Minister of State for External Affairs from 2001 to 2002.

End of Presidential Rule

Jammu and Kashmir had been under Presidential rule since 2018, following the withdrawal of support by the Bharatiya Janata Party from the coalition government. The recent revocation of Presidential rule allowed for the formation of the new government.
