Junior Doctors Protest in Kolkata: ‘Droher Carnival’ and Hunger Strike

In North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, the father of a deceased trainee doctor from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College praised the ‘Droher Carnival’ organized by junior doctors. This protest was held near the Bengal government’s Durga Puja immersion carnival in Kolkata. The Kolkata High Court had earlier overturned prohibitory orders by the police that restricted gatherings.

The ‘Droher Carnival’ was a response to the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the college. The father of the victim expressed his support, stating, “This is the victory of doctors, their carnival has begun.” He also mentioned that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is taking necessary time to gather evidence.

Junior doctors began a hunger strike on October 5, which gained support from the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on October 15. The IMA announced that junior doctors would fast from dawn to dusk nationwide, supported by the IMA Medical Students Network. The protest aims to address ten demands, with five doctors already moved to ICUs due to health concerns.

The protest follows the discovery of a woman trainee doctor’s body on August 9 in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College.
