Australia’s MATES Program Offers Indian Students Opportunities in High-Demand Sectors
Australia’s MATES program is opening doors for Indian students to study and work in specialized fields, addressing workforce shortages in Australia. Announced by Australian Assistant Minister for Immigration, Matt Thistlethwaite, the program allows young Indians aged 18 to 30 to pursue postgraduate studies in Australia in areas like renewable energy, AI, ICT, and engineering.
The MATES program, part of the migration and mobility partnership agreement signed in May 2023, aims to facilitate skill exchange between India and Australia. It offers 3,000 spots annually for Indian nationals to live and work in Australia for up to two years, with the possibility of bringing dependents who can also work.
During his visit to Amity University in Noida, Thistlethwaite highlighted the program’s benefits, emphasizing the demand for skills in AI and renewable energy. He assured students of visa flexibility, allowing them to work beyond the age of 30 if they apply before turning 30. While the initial visa is for two years, options for extension through graduate or skilled visas are available.
Although the MATES program currently focuses on specific fields, Thistlethwaite mentioned that students in law or liberal arts can explore other visa categories for studying in Australia.
