President Droupadi Murmu made history as the first Indian President to visit Algeria during her three-nation tour of Africa, which includes stops in Mauritania and Malawi from October 13 to 19. On her visit to Algeria, she explored the seawater desalination project at Fouka and paid tribute to former Indian President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam on his birth anniversary.

India-Algeria Economic Forum

President Murmu addressed the India-Algeria Economic Forum, emphasizing the need for stronger economic ties between the two nations. The forum, a collaborative effort by the Algerian Economic Renewal Council and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), saw participation from business and government leaders of both countries.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

During her visit, President Murmu met with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune at the El Mouradia Palace. They discussed various issues, focusing on enhancing trade and investment relations. President Murmu highlighted the historical ties between India and Algeria, recalling India’s support for Algeria’s freedom struggle and the shared commitment to peace and prosperity.

India-Africa Relations

President Murmu underscored the growing importance of India-Africa relations, noting that India is Africa’s fourth-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching USD 84 billion and investments exceeding USD 75 billion.

Droupadi Murmu, India’s 15th president, took office on July 25, 2022. She is the first person from a tribal community and the second woman to hold this position. Previously, she served as the Governor of Jharkhand and was a member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly.
