Justin Trudeau Accuses India of Supporting Criminal Activities in Canada

On Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of making a “fundamental error” by supporting criminal activities in Canada. Speaking at a press conference in Ottawa, Trudeau emphasized the importance of an upcoming meeting between the national security advisors of both countries in Singapore. He stated that he had discussed this with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the meeting to be taken seriously.

Trudeau, along with Canadian Minister of Public Safety Dominic LeBlanc and Minister of Foreign Affairs Melanie Joly, addressed the broader implications for Canada-India relations. He alleged that the Indian government supported criminal activities against Canadians, including murder and extortion, which he deemed “absolutely unacceptable.” Despite these tensions, Trudeau expressed Canada’s commitment to working with India, highlighting the deep historical ties between the two democracies.

Trudeau claimed that intelligence suggested India’s involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen, last summer. He stated that Canada had been transparent with India, seeking cooperation to ensure the safety of Canadians. However, he accused the Indian government of denying and attacking Canada’s integrity.

The diplomatic fallout intensified after the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) alleged criminal activities by Indian agents. In response, India expelled six Canadian diplomats, following Canada’s expulsion of six Indian diplomats. India rejected Canada’s allegations, calling them “preposterous” and accusing Canada of supporting extremists.
