India-Canada Diplomatic Tensions

Withdrawal of Indian High Commissioner

India has decided to withdraw its High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, along with other diplomats. This move comes after Canada, represented by Charge d’Affaires Stewart Wheeler, claimed to have evidence linking Indian government agents to the murder of a Canadian citizen.

Canada’s Allegations

Stewart Wheeler stated that Canada has provided “credible, irrefutable evidence” of India’s involvement in the murder. He urged India to investigate these allegations for the benefit of both nations.

India’s Response

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned Wheeler, expressing that the targeting of Indian diplomats in Canada is unacceptable. India accused the Canadian government of endangering the safety of its diplomats and criticized Canada’s support for extremism and violence.

Background of Tensions

The diplomatic strain began when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged India’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has denied these allegations, calling them “absurd” and “motivated.” The MEA accused Trudeau’s government of allowing extremists to threaten Indian diplomats and leaders in Canada.
