India Withdraws High Commissioner Amid Tensions with Canada

On October 14, India summoned Canada’s Charge d’Affaires, Stewart Wheeler, to express discontent over the alleged targeting of Indian diplomats in Canada. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that the actions of the Canadian government, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, have endangered the safety of Indian diplomats, prompting India to withdraw its High Commissioner, Sanjay Kumar Verma, and other officials.

The MEA criticized the Trudeau government for supporting extremism and violence, accusing it of allowing extremists to threaten Indian diplomats and community leaders. India rejected Canada’s claims that its diplomats were “persons of interest” in an investigation, labeling these accusations as politically motivated.

India’s response follows a history of strained relations, exacerbated by Trudeau’s allegations of India’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has denied these allegations, accusing Canada of harboring anti-India elements.

The MEA emphasized that India reserves the right to take further actions in response to Canada’s stance, which it views as part of a broader political agenda.
