Protests in Shigar Over Sarfaranga Cold Desert Land Ruling
The Shigar district in Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan is witnessing ongoing protests against a court ruling that declared the Sarfaranga Cold Desert as state land. This protest has now entered its third week. The Chief Court’s decision, made on September 19, has been met with strong opposition from locals who claim historical rights to the land, known as one of the highest cold deserts globally.
Protesters have been vocal, demanding justice and asserting that the Sarfaranga Maidan has been their traditional grazing land for centuries, as per government records. The land disputes date back to the era of Zia ul Haq when parts of the land were allocated to settlers, leading to conflicts. A settlement was previously reached, but recent court actions threaten to displace many local families.
The situation intensified when authorities deployed police to enforce the ruling, resulting in the demolition of local structures on September 23. This action has strengthened the community’s resolve to resist. In response, residents have set up a protest camp in the desert, gaining widespread regional support. The community, including women and children, is united in demanding the reversal of the court’s decision.
A protester stated, “Our protest will not stop. We will explore every legal avenue available. Our appeal is set to be heard soon, and we will continue to protest until justice is served. We will stand our ground against any attempts to seize our land.”
