Dharamshala Welcomes More Foreign Tourists in 2024

Vinay Dhiman, the District Tourism Officer of Dharamshala, announced a significant increase in foreign tourists visiting the region this year. The number of visitors is nearing pre-Covid levels, boosting the local tourism industry.

Attractions in Dharamshala

Dharamshala, located in the Kangra Valley of Himachal Pradesh, is a popular destination for various reasons. Many tourists come for the teachings of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. Others are drawn to yoga wellness centers, adventure sports like paragliding and trekking, and the natural beauty of the area. Cricket and cultural experiences also attract visitors.

Tourism Statistics

In 2021, only 2,700 foreign tourists visited Kangra district. This number rose to 6,500 in 2022 and reached 16,222 in 2023. By August 2024, 16,474 foreign tourists had already visited, matching the previous year’s data.

Future Expectations

Dhiman expects a 25% increase in foreign tourists compared to last year, despite some Israeli tourists not visiting due to the war. Upcoming events like the paragliding World Cup in Bir Billing and a Pre-World Cup in Narwana are expected to attract more visitors.

Tourist Experiences

Mauli, an American tourist, expressed his admiration for the local culture and lifestyle. He plans to explore the Himalayas through trekking. A Russian visitor highlighted the pleasant weather, good accommodations, and the teachings of the Dalai Lama as reasons for his visit.
